How to Redo Particleboard Cupboard Shelves

Particleboard is a common building material that is often used in home furnishings such as cupboard shelves. It is made from particles of wood that are pressed together. It is an affordable option for furnishings but is not as attractive as solid hardwood. If the finish has become worn on your cupboard shelves, apply a new finish. Another option to redo the shelves is to install a stylish shelf/drawer liner. These liners come in a wide variety of styles to match any taste. Combine the liner with a fresh finish and your cabinet shelves will be better than ever.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the contents from the cupboard shelves and peel off the shelf liners if there are any in place.

    • 2

Sand the shelves with a fine-grit sanding pad until the finish is slightly dulled. This will allow the new finish to adhere well over the existing finish.

    • 3

Wipe off the shelves with a tack cloth to remove all of the sanding dust. It is important to have a dust-free surface to apply a new finish.

    • 4

Brush on two even coats of wood finish over each shelf. Allow the finish to dry for four hours between coats. Wait 24 hours after the second coat before continuing.

    • 5

Roll out shelf liner over each shelf. Trim the liner to fit each shelf using a utility knife. Remove the trimmed liners.

    • 6

Peel off the adhesive backing from each liner. Lay the liners on the shelves and press them evenly onto the shelves.
