How to Make an Easy Hammock Swing for Kids

Traditional net hammocks can be scratchy, but a hammock made of soft cotton is soft, warm and inviting. Additionally, the hammock can be machine washed when it becomes soiled. This kid's hammock requires only two supplies and can be assembled in less than an hour. You can hand-sew it if you lack a sewing machine, although hand-sewing will take more time. Although this hammock is designed for outdoor use, you can install it indoors as well, with sturdy hooks attached to ceiling beams.

Things You'll Need

  • 36-inch-wide heavy-duty cotton fabric, 2 yards
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • 3/8-inch-wide polypropylene rope, 50 feet in length
  • 4-inch dowel or smooth stick

Instructions

Make seams along the long edges of the fabric to make a neat edge and prevent fraying. Fold the edges down 3/8-inch on each long side, and iron the fabric to make a crisp edge. Fold the edges again to conceal the raw edge. Iron the edge once more. Sew along the edges to make the seam.

Make a pocket on either short end to hold the rope that will secure the hammock. Fold the edges of the fabric on either short end 3/8 inch. Fold the fabric down an additional 2 inches to make a 2-inch-wide pocket. Iron the edge to make it smooth. Sew the pocket three times to reinforce it. This pocket must be strong enough to hold the weight of your child.

Cut the rope in half and tie each length of rope to a small dowel. Insert the dowel into the pocket and pull the rope through so it is centered. Remove the dowel.
