Can You Put Resin Applique on a Cracked Bathtub?

When deciding what to do with a cracked bathtub, you may consider covering the damaged area with resin appliques. However, before decorating your bathtub with any appliques, you should repair any damage -- including holes and cracks -- to the bathtub surface. In addition, resin appliques are not the same as bathtub appliques and can't be used everywhere in a bathtub.
  1. Resin Appliques

    • Resin appliques are not the same thing as bathtub appliques. Resin appliques are typically used as embellishments for clothing and bags or in jewelry and crafts projects. They are generally are not flat on all sides and instead have some sort of raised surface. For example, a flower resin applique could have three-dimensional blooms on the front, with a flat back to allow the applique to be set flush against the surface. If you want to decorate the exterior of the bathtub with resin appliques, place a dollop of super glue on the back of the applique, and press it on the desired surface. Hold the applique in place for several seconds to allow the glue to adhere to the bathtub. To avoid a safety hazard, don't place resin appliques in the interior of the bathtub.

    Bathtub Appliques

    • Made from cloth or vinyl, bathtub appliques serve dual purposes. They not only decorate both the exterior and interior of the tub, but they also help prevent slipping while bathing or showering. Bathtub appliques generally feature a peel-and-stick backing and come in various shapes and designs, including sea creatures. With care, these cloth or vinyl bathtub appliques will last for many years.

    Cracked Bathtubs

    • You should fix a cracked bathtub as soon as possible, instead of merely covering the damaged area with appliques. Placing appliques of any kind over bathtub cracks will not solve the problem and might even cause more harm than good. Before installing bathtub or resin appliques, repair the cracks with a do-it-yourself kit.

    Repairing Bathtub Cracks

    • Repair the cracks in the bathtub with a bathtub repair kit, which includes a hardening compound and filler that you mix together. For best results, follow the instructions included in the repair kit. Spread the mixture across the crack as evenly as possible, and let it dry for the time indicated in the instructions. Next, sand the repair with fine-grit sandpaper until the surface is smooth. After you have repaired the crack, you will still be able to tell which area of the tub has been repaired. Fortunately, you can cover the repair by either placing a resin or bathtub applique on that area or painting the entire bathtub.
