How to Get Stains Off Oneida Silverware

Oneida silverware is silver-plated stainless steel, which ensures the durability of stainless with the beauty of silver. Silverware, regardless of the manufacturer, requires special care so it doesn't tarnish or develop etching in the soft metal. Tarnishing stains the silver, giving a dark and sometimes iridescent coating. This results from oxidation, or exposure to air. Washing correctly removes and polishes away the tarnish, so the silverware develops a deep luster and shine.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the silverware by hand, using mild dish soap, or in the dishwasher. Oneida advises that their silverware is dishwasher safe, but it cannot be washed with aluminum or other metal items in the same load.

    • 2

Dry the silverware with a soft cotton cloth immediately after washing, so water spots don't develop.

    • 3

Dampen the cloth, sprinkle baking soda on it and polish away any tarnished spots. Moisten and add more baking soda to the cloth, as necessary.

    • 4

Rinse the silverware in clear water and dry with a clean cloth. Store the silverware in a tarnish-proof chest or bag, which helps slow the oxidation process.
