How to Fold a Navy Bed

When you go into the Navy you're met with a variety of expectations, and one of those expectations has to do with housekeeping. The way you fold a bed in the Navy can make or break the impression you have on the officers you report to. As such, it doesn't hurt to practice folding a bed Naval-style before arriving at boot camp or your station. A few things to keep in mind when it comes to folding a military bed are that the corners have to be folded in and the bed must be wrinkle-free.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one of the flat sheets on top of the mattress. Normally, this is where the fitted bed sheet would go, but the Navy does not use fitted sheets for their beds. As such, you need to turn the flat sheet into a fitted bed sheet by tucking in the sheet underneath the mattress.

    • 2

Start on the foot end of the bed. Lift the mattress slightly and use your hand to tuck the sheet in between the mattress and the bed frame.

    • 3

Select the right or left side of the bed to start on next. Lift the sheet up at the side that hangs down and place it in the middle of the bed so that it creates a 45-degree angle from the corner. Even out the sheet to free it from wrinkles. You should have approximately 1 foot of the sheet still draped over the side next to the corner. Tuck this part underneath the mattress.

    • 4

Bring the rest of the sheet -- which is folded back in the middle of the bed -- down to hang over the side again. Tuck this part underneath the bed. Use your hand to smooth out the wrinkles. Tug at the sheet to make the corner and side look even tighter. The tighter you make the folds and tucks, the more crisp the bed will appear.

    • 5

Work your way up that same side of the bed to tuck in the sheet, until you get to the head of the bed. Smooth out that side of the bed again. Repeat the process with the second side of the bed.

    • 6

Place the second flat sheet on top of the first. Line the second sheet up at the head of the mattress, so that it is edge to edge with the first sheet. Even out both sides of the sheet so that one side of the bed doesn't have more sheet overhang than the other.

    • 7

Throw the blanket onto the bed, lining it up with the second sheet. If the blanket has the letters "U.S." or the word "Navy" on it, keep these words facing up so you can see them.

    • 8

Tuck in the second sheet along with the blanket, starting with the foot end of the bed. Make the 45-degree corners and tuck them in to create hospital corners, just like with the first sheet.

    • 9

Move onto the second corner at the foot of the bed. When you are done with the hospital corners, tuck in the sides all the way up to the headboard.
