Is There a Replacement for Latex Backing on Drapes?

Latex-backed drapes -- also called rubber-backed drapes -- help to insulate your windows. The latex backing keeps cold air from entering your home while preventing the heat from escaping. These thermal curtains can also lower your utility bills. Unfortunately, improper care and cleaning may damage the latex backing. However, you can repair the latex backing with a replacement.
  1. Repairing Latex Backing

    • If the damage to the latex is not severe, such as small rips or holes, there is no need for a replacement, and you can simply fix the minor damage yourself. Repair the holes or rips by gluing replacement rubber over the damaged latex. Rubber backing from old rugs or rubber carpet backing works well to cover and seal small rips and holes on the back of the curtain. Another option is to cover small holes or tears with latex caulking. When using caulking, smooth it over the damaged area as evenly as possible and let dry for several hours.

    Replacing Latex Backing

    • If the latex backing is too damaged to repair, you can remove the entire backing carefully with a seam ripper and replace it with a few other options. You can sew thick fabric -- such as thermal suede, flannel or jacquard -- to the back of the curtain. This provides insulation against the windows and replaces the damaged latex backing. For even more insulation, fill the space between the drapes and the new backing with pillow or quilt filler.

    Caring for Latex-Backed Drapes

    • Regularly use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove dirt, dust and debris from the surface of the drapes. If the drapes require a more thorough cleaning, remove them from the curtain rod and launder them in a washing machine set to the "gentle" or "delicate" cycle. Use a cold or cool water temperature to prevent color fading and shrinking. Once the curtains are cleaned, let them hang dry for several hours. Drying the latex-backed drapes in the dryer can damage the latex backing.

    Tips

    • Always follow your specific curtain brand's washing instructions. Each brand has its own set of manufacturer’s recommended care and cleaning directions. By following these instructions, you can help prolong the life of your latex-backed curtains.
