DIY Air Dryer

Desiccants help pull moisture out of the air and reduce the possibility of mold and mildew growth. By making your own air dryer, you can save money rather than buying the commercially available products. These air dryers are made with silica gel, which has the added benefit of being reusable. Silica gel is often blue when it is fresh. When it has absorbed all the moisture it can, it turns pink. You can dry out the gel and turn it blue again so it can be reused.

Instructions

Use the ice pick and hammer to punch five or six holes in the lid of the plastic container. Once you have the holes started, use the screwdriver to enlarge them. You want each hole to be about the same diameter as a pencil. The holes allow moisture in and will help keep the gel in the container, if it gets knocked over.

Fill the container with 2 inches of the silica gel. Silica is not a gooey gel, but instead is like little beads. Silica gel tends to absorb about half its weight in moisture so the added space is necessary when the beads expand.

Place the lid back on the container. The air dryer is now made and ready to be used. Place it in a closet to help keep clothes fresh or make multiple dryers and use them in larger areas such as crawl spaces or attics.
