How to Restore Needle Pillows

A needle pillow, or pincushion, is a creative and charming accessory for storing your sewing needles. Not only will the pillow look attractive resting on your sewing or craft table, it's a convenient way to keep track of your needles. If you have a vintage or well-loved pincushion with rips and filling falling out, you can restore it rather than buy a new one. Bring the pillow back to its original splendor with a few simple techniques.

Things You'll Need

  • Pillow stuffing, such as poly fiberfill or natural cotton stuffing
  • Embroidery needle and thread

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the torn seam on the needle pillow or pincushion. Replace lost filling by gently stuffing fresh filling into the hole. Use poly fiberfill or natural cotton stuffing, depending on what you have on hand.

    • 2

Fill the pillow with the stuffing until it is dense and solid again, which will provide the best support for the sewing needles and pins.

    • 3

Thread the end of a sharp embroidery needle with embroidery thread, and knot one end. Choose thread that complements the color of the needle pillow for a cohesive look.

    • 4

Repair the torn seam or hole in the pillow's fabric by stitching it closed with the needle and thread. Pierce the needle through one side of the bottom of the hole and then into the other side to pull the tear together. Insert the needle into the opposite side of the hole and bring it across to the original side to continue stitching the tear. Repeat the process, bringing the needle and thread back and forth until the hole is completely sewn together. Complete the task by making a small back stitch at the top of the hole to secure the thread into place. Cut the leftover excess thread with scissors. Keep the thread tension loose as you sew, as pulling it too tightly could further damage the fabric.
