DIY: Metal Awning Window Frames

Measure the window’s width using a tape measure. Add 4 inches to this measurement. Measure how far you want the awning to protrude from the house by extending a rope at a 90-degree angle out from the window to the window frame’s vertical side.

Hold a wall bracket against the side of the window’s frame at the location where the top of the aluminum awning will go. Secure the bracket to the frame with galvanized steel screws. Attach a second wall bracket in the same manner on the other side of the window frame. Use a level to make sure the brackets are aligned.

Attach a 4-foot-long aluminum bar vertically to each side of the window frame with steel screws. These bars must be attached below the wall brackets. If the window is smaller than 4 feet long, use a 1- or 2-foot-long aluminum bar.

Create the horizontal supports by cutting two aluminum bars so they measure the width of the awning. Cut three pieces of aluminum bars according to the length of the awning. Drill through the bars to attach two of the pieces to the awning’s sloped edges with screws and a power drill. The third bar will be used as a brace down the center of the awning’s body.

Cut the painted aluminum sheeting with a power saw according to the length and width measurements. This is the main body of the awning. Secure this cut sheeting to the horizontal section on both sides of the L-frame with galvanized steel screws. The vertical section of the awning will hang down at a 90-degree angle.

Hold the main awning against the horizontal frames and secure it in place with screws at the top and bottom. Attach the main awning to the wall support brackets with screws. Affix the base bars on the window frame with screws and secure them to the body of the main frame.

Cut the triangular side panels from a piece of aluminum sheeting according to the measurements taken. Attach the panels to the frame bars located on the side of the metal awning. Use six screws -- one screw at each triangular corner and one in the center of each side -- to attach the panels to the bars.
