Instructions for Making an Aluminum Awning

Awnings are a common sight above doors and windows. The awning shades and protects the area underneath from elements such as rain and snow. Instead of purchasing a premade metal awning, save yourself money and build your own. Constructing the awning out of aluminum is both inexpensive and durable. Over time, the aluminum awning will require some cleaning and maintenance such as spraying with a water hose to remove dirt or applying a fresh coat of spray paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how long the awning will be by measuring the length of the window including the window frame. Use a rope to determine how far out you want the awning to protrude. Hold the rope against the top corner of the window frame and stretch it outward at a 90-degree angle. This measurement will be the width of the awning.

    • 2

Fasten a wall bracket with a screwdriver and steel screws on each side of the window frame. These brackets must be placed at the top corner of each side of the window frame. Consider using a carpenter’s level to make sure the brackets are correctly aligned with each other.

    • 3

Secure the 4-foot aluminum bar on the side of the window frame vertically and directly beneath the wall brackets. Cut two aluminum bars according to the measurements taken in the first step. These bars are the horizontal supports.

    • 4

Secure two pieces of aluminum bars that measure the length of the awning to the sloped edges on the awning. Use steel screws and a power drill to attach the bars.

    • 5

Paint unpainted aluminum sheeting in the desired color with weather-resistant spray paint. Wait until the paint is dry and cut the aluminum with a power saw. Use the length and width measurement taken before to determine the cutting measurements.

    • 6

Screw an aluminum bar that measures the length of the awning down the middle of the cut awning sheeting. This will work as a brace for the body of the awning. Screw the cut sheeting to the sides of the horizontal second L-frame. The vertical section of the awning should hang downward at a 90-degree angle.

    • 7

Affix the awning to the horizontal frame with steel screws at the bottom and top. Secure the awning to the wall support brackets with screws. Install the base bars to the window frame with steel screws. Attach the base bars to the main frame’s body using steel screws.

Create triangular side panels by cutting a sheet of aluminum. Cut the sheeting using the measurements previously taken. Position the triangular side panels against the side of the frame bars. Secure the panels in place with a steel screw at each corner of the triangle and one in the center.
