How to Use a Curtain Rod as a Quilt Hanger

Hanging a decorative quilt requires the proper method and hardware; otherwise stress on the quilt fibers can result in small tears, stretching and other damage. Curtain rods provide an attractive option for hanging the quilt, although the quilt does require some altering to hang from the rod securely. Avoid rods that require curtain clips because these aren't suitable for quilts. A smooth 1-inch diameter rod works best. Select one with decorative finials and ensure that the rod is at least 4 inches longer than the width of the quilt.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4-inch-wide strip from unbleached muslin fabric. Make the strip the same length as the top of the quilt.

    • 2

Lay the quilt face down on your work table. Line the top edge of the muslin strip up with the top edge of the quilt and pin it in place.

    • 3

Sew the top of the strip to the quilt, using a thread that matches the quilt front. Sew through all the quilt layers. Sew the bottom of the muslin strip on in the same fashion to create a rod pocket on the back of the quilt. Use a sewing machine or sew by hand, as preferred.

Attach the curtain rod mounting hardware to the wall, using a carpenter's level to ensure it is straight. Screw the mounts into a wall stud, if possible. Locate a stud by knocking on the wall gently with a hammer. Stud locations produce a solid sound. If you can't mount directly in a stud, use a drywall anchor screw so the rod doesn't pull out of the drywall under the weight of the quilt.

Slide the curtain rod into the muslin pocket. Hang the rod on the mounting hardware to display the quilt.
