Household Packing List

For some people, moving causes stress and anxiety, but with organizational lists and tips you can cut back on feeling overwhelmed when it's time to pack up and move to your new home. A packing list is helpful because it ensures you know where everything is and makes unpacking easier. To keep the transition as easy as possible, prepare for the move with a packing list and give yourself plenty of time to get organized before the big day.
  1. Packing Materials

    • Prepare for the move by purchasing the materials needed to keep your personal belongings safe. Purchase sturdy moving boxes in various sizes to accommodate different belongings. You'll also need rolls of packing tape, bubble wrap for delicate items, newspaper for glass or dishes and scissors to help you cut tape or paper. Create a list of items you'll need from the moving store to help you get the proper amount of materials.

    Important Documents

    • Prevent important documents from getting lost during a move by keeping them together with you. Make copies of all documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, legal documents, insurance paperwork and information, vehicle registration and insurance policies and even pet vaccination records. Store the copies in a durable file cabinet and keep the original records in a folder with your personal belongings during the move.

    Written Inventory

    • Keep track of your belongings by writing them down as you begin to pack and move. While you track your belongings, you may also write down the values of the items along with the purchase date. This allows you to create a current record of your belongings in the event they get lost or damaged and will help you submit your information to the insurance company.

    Box Organization

    • Label each box with a sheet of paper describing the contents of each box. This will help movers place the boxes in the proper location in the new house and help you find items easier when you begin to unpack. Keep contents of the list specific to one room or use, such as bathroom necessities such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toilet paper.
