Prepare for the move by purchasing the materials needed to keep your personal belongings safe. Purchase sturdy moving boxes in various sizes to accommodate different belongings. You'll also need rolls of packing tape, bubble wrap for delicate items, newspaper for glass or dishes and scissors to help you cut tape or paper. Create a list of items you'll need from the moving store to help you get the proper amount of materials.
Prevent important documents from getting lost during a move by keeping them together with you. Make copies of all documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, legal documents, insurance paperwork and information, vehicle registration and insurance policies and even pet vaccination records. Store the copies in a durable file cabinet and keep the original records in a folder with your personal belongings during the move.
Keep track of your belongings by writing them down as you begin to pack and move. While you track your belongings, you may also write down the values of the items along with the purchase date. This allows you to create a current record of your belongings in the event they get lost or damaged and will help you submit your information to the insurance company.
Label each box with a sheet of paper describing the contents of each box. This will help movers place the boxes in the proper location in the new house and help you find items easier when you begin to unpack. Keep contents of the list specific to one room or use, such as bathroom necessities such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toilet paper.
