Tips on Shipping Boxes

Whether you are shipping a box for business or pleasure, it is important you take your time and do it right. It may seem like a straightforward task, but if something goes wrong, it can be a huge headache. Packages get lost, rerouted and damaged everyday, and attempting to solve a shipping issue once it has occurred can be a lengthy process. Knowing a few tips for shipping packages can help you avoid potential problems.
  1. Pick the Right Box

    • Box selection is an important part of shipping. If a box is too large for the contents in it, the items may become damaged. Generally, it is better to use a small box because it is easier to handle. If you choose a larger box, cushion the extra space with packing materials so your items stay in one spot during shipping. It is advisable to use new boxes instead of used ones because they have no wear and tear or prior markings on them. Examine the box carefully if it is not new to ensure it is sturdy enough to endure the shipping process.

    Pack Wisely

    • Pack your items with plenty of cushioning so they are well protected. Wrap each item in the box individually, and fill any loose space to with paper, Styrofoam peanuts or bubble wrap. If you are using newspaper to cushion the items in your box, it is important to note that ink from the newspaper may transfer to your items. For this reason you may not want to use newspaper on items that can not be wiped or washed. Avoid putting fragile items with heavier items that may bang into or crush them.

    Tape All Seams

    • Before sealing the box, close it and gently shake it. If the contents in the box don't move when you shake it, you can proceed with sealing the box. If they do move, you will need to add more packing material. When you seal your box for shipping, make sure that all the seams of the box are secure. Do this by covering all the seams of the box with packing tape. You want to avoid leaving any open ends that may become snagged.

    Clearly Label

    • If you expect your box to get from point A to point B without an issue, it needs to be clearly labeled. Make sure you write the information on the label neatly so it is legible. Put a return address in case your package gets lost. Place the label on the top of the box in a corner. Do not put the label on a seam as it may cause it to become damaged. Use a waterproof label or marker. Remove any old labels from the box. Mark the box "Fragile" if it contains breakable items. Place a duplicate label inside the box in case the label on the outside of the box becomes damaged.

    Insure Boxes

    • When you are shipping boxes, it is important to get insurance. Most major shipping companies and the United States Postal Service offer insurance for packages. Insurance is of particular importance if you are shipping something valuable, or if you are shipping something a long distance.
