How to Use a Silverware Tray

Silverware trays offer a way to organize your flatware within your drawers. You can pull silverware trays out of drawers and use them to store your flatware on a countertop when entertaining. This allows guests to use the necessary silverware without you having to hand it to them. Narrow silverware trays usually have four to five compartments versus those that fit wider drawers, and offer six to eight different sections to separate different types of flatware.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your silverware tray with warm soapy water and dish detergent to remove dirt and germs, and allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Line a kitchen drawer close to your counter top and cooking space with drawer lining paper. This protects the wood from scratches that can occur if the silverware tray slides when you open and close the drawer.

    • 3

Place the silverware tray into the drawer so that the horizontal section is at the top of your drawer. Wash and dry the silverware to prevent rusting.

    • 4

Put knives, forks, soup spoons and teaspoons in their own vertical sections within the tray. Place cutlery or serving utensils in the horizontal section at the top of the tray. Use remaining sections of the tray to hold small utensils such as can openers, bottle openers, measuring spoons, paring knives and zesters.

    • 5

Remove the tray from the drawer when entertaining. Place it in an easy-to-reach spot near plates and food so guests can help themselves. Replace utensils that are not flatware from the horizontal section with napkins or wet naps.
