DIY Desk Drawer Divider

Keeping your desk neat and organized makes being productive in your work space easier as you can find what you need quicker than if you have to rummage through a messy drawer. Office supply stores sell a variety of different containers you can use to keep your desk drawers organized, but as desk drawers vary in size, the best way to utse every inch of your desk drawer space is to make your own custom drawer organizer. Construct your desk drawer organizer from durable, yet inexpensive, plastic canvas.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width, depth and height of the inside of the desk drawer.

    • 2

Measure and mark with a permanent marker two pieces of plastic canvas to the height and width of the draw, two pieces to the depth and height and one piece to the width and depth of the drawer. Cut out all the pieces with scissors

    • 3

Sew the pieces together to form an open-top box the same size as the inside of the drawer using an overcast stitch. To do this sew through a square of one canvas piece, through the corresponding square of the adjoining piece and then bring the needle and thread back around to the first piece of canvas to sew through the next set of corresponding squares. Continue stitching up the seam of the two pieces of canvas until all the corresponding squares are sewn together. The piece of plastic canvas that is cut to the width and depth of the drawer makes up the bottom of the box and the remaining four pieces make up the sides. Overcast stitch along the lined up edges of the pieces and in the corners where the sides come together.

Measure mark and cut a piece of plastic canvas that is the width and height of the desk drawer. Use an overcast stitch to sew this piece of canvas inside the open box you created three inches from the front of the box to create a compartment for storing writing utensils.

Measure, mark and cut two pieces that are the depth of the drawer minus 3 inches and the height of the drawer. Sew these pieces in the box running from the back of the front compartment to the back of the box. Space these compartments as needed to store the items you want in the drawer.

Cut two pieces of plastic canvas to the height of the drawer and the width of one of the compartments that runs to the back of the drawer. Sew these pieces of canvas in place so they divide that compartment into three smaller compartments for storing items such as rubber bands, memo pads and paper clips. Leave the other two compartments that run to the back of the drawer for larger items such as scissors and a ruler.
