Uses for a Trash Can

Gardening

• New or used plastic garbage cans, even ones with cracks or small holes, can be used for gardening. Storage

• Many trash cans come with lids, making them ideal for storage. Since trash cans are made of waterproof materials, they are suitable for storing items that must be protected from the elements. Keep animal feed in a trash can with a lid. Store potting soil and mulch in a large trash can with wheels, making it easy to transport. Store tools and sporting goods in a tall, open trash can.

Diaper Pail

• For parents using cloth diapers, having a large diaper pail is essential. A large trash can with a snug lid makes a practical diaper pail. Line the trash can with a pail liner to keep it dry and help control odors. Essential oil on a small piece of fabric attached to the inside of the trash can lid helps keep odors at bay. Once baby is out of diapers, use the trash can for storage or trash.

Composting

• Large trash cans with locking lids make good composting containers. Drill holes in the bottom and sides of the trash can and set the can up on bricks to allow air circulation. Add items such as uncooked vegetable and fruit scraps, dried leaves and shredded paper to create your compost, being sure to keep it moist and turn it weekly. Keep the lid on the trash can to keep scavengers out.
