How to De-Clutter a Bedroom With Too Many Clothes

If you're stepping over clothing, or you can't find the clothes you want anymore, it may be time to de-clutter your bedroom. The first step in de-cluttering a bedroom is to go through all your clothes. You may be surprised how many items you don't wear anymore and how many you can get rid of easily. Do one big purge and keep up with your organizational rules to keep your bedroom organized and free of clutter.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull out all your clothes and put them in an area where you can see them all at once. If you are unable to do it all at once, set aside some time each day to go through your clothes.

    • 2

Make a few piles: "Keep," "Give Away," "Trash," and "Repair." During your first clothing purge, put clothes into their designated piles. Put items you want to keep into the "Keep" pile; place items you want to donate into the "Give Away" pile; cast items that can be thrown away into the "Trash" pile; and assign items you want to keep but need repairs into the "Repair" pile. Throw away any unusable hangers that may be taking up room in your closet.

    • 3

Purge your items a second time if you still have too many clothes. However, this time you will only need two piles: "Keep" and "Give Away."

    • 4

Get rid of items that you haven't worn in a year. Exceptions to this rule may be something like a designer dress that you wear only for special occasions. But if you are hanging onto a pair of jeans that are too short and you haven't worn them in two years, get rid of them.

    • 5

Give a home to every piece of clothing that is going back into your bedroom.

    • 6

Hang items like cotton T-shirts, silk shirts, trousers, skirts, suit jackets, and outdoor jackets.

    • 7

Fold items like knitwear so each item holds its shape. Casual pants like jeans and khakis should also be folded. Heavier evening dresses should be folded so they hold their shape. These folded items should go into a dresser or other organizational piece with drawers.

Remember the "one item in, one item out" rule. For every new item that goes into your closet, get rid of one old item.
