How to Control Outdoor Garbage Odor Naturally

Outdoor garbage cans often begin to smell, especially if they contain lots of food waste, are improperly sealed or are placed in the sun or hot weather. Although you can eliminate garbage odors, it's more efficient to adjust your trash habits to prevent that distinctive, disgusting smell. Controlling garbage odor keeps flies and rodents away from your trash and ensures that the outside of your home remains a pleasant space to socialize.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your garbage can in a cool, shaded location. Do not put your garbage can in direct sunlight, which encourages decomposition and odors.

    • 2

Dilute vinegar with water and pour or spray inside your garbage can and on your garbage can lid. Allow your can to dry completely.

    • 3

Line the bottom of your garbage can with newspaper and sprinkle it with baking soda. This absorbs liquids and neutralizes odor.

    • 4

Compost your food scraps or use a garbage disposal, if possible. Wrap remaining food scraps in paper bags or newspaper before putting them in the trash.

    • 5

Cover food scraps with shredded paper. This absorbs moisture and soaks up offending odors.

    • 6

Seal pet waste, sanitary waste or any wet garbage in plastic bags before putting it in the trash can.

    • 7

Tie garbage bags tightly and keep your garbage can lid tightly closed at all times.
