Creative Places for Food Storage

Countless individuals look for creative ways to store food. Many choose to keep extra food items handy for emergency or disastrous events, such as hurricanes or tornadoes. Shoppers who purchase bulk food items to save money also need additional storage space. If you lack extra storage space, you must be creative when deciding where you want to put extra food items. Carpentry skills make this process easier, however, it is not always necessary to build additional shelves or closets to create a space for storage.
  1. Store Food in a Garage

    • Turn your garage into a food pantry or a large food storage closet. Most garages are equipped with walls, floors, roofs and doors, which makes this an ideal space to store food. Garages are large enough to hold additional refrigerators and large freezers, making it easy to store both perishable and non-perishable items. An enclosed garage is climate-controlled, so your non-perishable food items do not overheat. Garages are also ideal for storing large amounts of bottled water.

    Use an Armoire

    • Old armoires that sit around unused are great for storing non-perishable food items. Armoires are wide, tall and very large, so you can store a variety of items in them. They feature doors, which makes them ideal for storing items inconspicuously. Use the large, flat surface on top of your armoire for additional storage. Neatly stack plastic storage containers or canisters containing food items on top of your armoire.

    Alcove Storage

    • Alcoves are often unused spaces, but are ideal for storing extra food items. Alcoves are built-in, secluded areas within a larger space. You find them in kitchens, dens, living rooms and hallways. They are narrow, so you must build shelves to use the entire length of an alcove and maximize your storage space. You can also build a small door or install a curtain to hide your stored items.

    Underneath a Staircase

    • If the space under your stairwell is not enclosed, this is an ideal place for storing food. The size of the space determines the amount of food you can store, but even small spaces hold canned foods and small bags of dried goods. Adding shelves allows you to organize your items and maximize the use of this space. Use a curtain or install a door to enclose this area.
