While these batteries make our lives easier and more entertaining, they are potentially very destructive to the environment if disposed improperly. According to Environment, Health and Safety Online, batteries can pollute lakes and streams from the vapor emitted when burned and leach heavy metals into the soil when thrown in the landfill. There is a simple way to recycle Nickel metal hydride and other batteries, however, using the Call2Recycle program, which places battery recycling dropoffs all around the U.S. and Canada.
