Fall Flowers for Window Centerpieces

Sure, summer fades to autumn, but that doesn't mean the garden fades too. Whether you're harvesting blooms from your garden for window centerpieces or looking for commercial alternatives, you've got a lot to choose from. Combine classic autumn staples with pretty blooms, and change out different elements of your centerpiece as they fade for a season-long celebration of bounty.
  1. Colors

    • Fall's palette runs deeper than summer's. Look for burgundy, orange, yellow, white, rose, pink or purple flowers to incorporate into your window centerpiece. Other than yellow, stay away from colors that evoke springtime weather. While classic autumn flowers are appropriate in a fall window centerpiece, you can also incorporate flowers that are available year-round if you stay within the fall color scheme.

    Classic Choices

    • Look outside to get inspired for fall centerpieces. Flowers that grow near you in the fall make classic choices for these displays. Hydrangeas, still in bloom in autumn, mums and even the last of the garden roses all make sense in a fall bouquet. Other fall flowers include dahlias and black-eyed Susans. Incorporate dried seed heads of poppies, leaves from eucalyptus shrubs or other flora into your bouquet.

    Flowers

    • While going with what's in bloom makes sense, sometimes you want to change it up. You can find gerber daisies available year-round; red, orange and yellow hues work well in autumn bouquets. Calla lilies also come in a somber color palette and aren't tricky to track down commercially. If you don't have roses, you can purchase elegant red, orange, yellow, purple or peach-hued blossoms.

    Other Options

    • Incorporate cabbages, pumpkins, pine cones and gourds into a fall window centerpiece to emphasize the fall theme. Decorative kales and cabbages provide contrasting greenery for your flowers, while gourds or pumpkins are a classic way to spruce up for fall. Pine cones and pumpkins provide long-lasting decor, so swap in fresh flowers as yours fade for an ever-changing bouquet centerpiece. Don't forget about fall foliage. Once the leaves start changing, you can incorporate vivid autumn branches for a blast of color.
