How to Remove Dried-Up Rubber Bands

Rubber bands are useful for holding things together. Whether holding a book or binder closed, holding vegetables together, keeping pens organized or one of many other uses, rubber bands are found in many applications. Over time because of using and removing and temperature changes, the rubber can become brittle and dried out. Pulling it off like you would a new rubber band can lead to bits of rubber everywhere, so special care needs to be taken to remove a dried-out rubber band.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the item with the dried-up rubber band on a cloth or paper towel on a flat surface as the brittle pieces of the rubber band can fall off.

    • 2

Carefully slip one tip of the scissors between the rubber band and what it is wrapped around.

    • 3

Slowly snip the rubber band with the scissors.

    • 4

Grasp one end of the snipped rubber band between two fingers and slide it off of the item. Do not pull or twist too hard as this can cause the already dried-up band to break into many smaller pieces.

    • 5

Wipe down the item with a paper towel. If possible, gently shake the item to remove dried-up bits of the rubber band.
