How to Organize Cubbies

Organizing your home with cubbies is a great way to keep items grouped together and in order. However, over time, even cubbies can become cluttered and filled with random items. There are a few simple things that you can take to keep your cubbies organized and clutter free, including adding color coding and labels as well as eliminating unrelated items from entering all of your bins by adding a "to sort" bin to the cubby system.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean out all of the contents of your cubbies and sort out and group like items or items that you use for a particular activity or task.

    • 2

Fill one colored bin with each of the grouped items and insert it into a cubbie. Place small items inside small organizer trays inside the bin to help keep the contents of the bins organized.

    • 3

Cut the card stock into labels for each bin using scissors. You can cut round, square or other shapes for the bins. Fun animal shapes could work well for a child's bins.

    • 4

Cut a strip of adhesive backed Velcro for each bin. Remove the backing and attach one side to the front of the bins and one side to the back of the labels. Place the respective labels onto the bins using the Velcro to secure them in place.

Leave one bin empty and label it "to sort." This will enable you to keep your bins clutter free. When you or other members of your household approach the cubbies with an item that doesn't immediately match the content of the existing bins, it can be placed in the "to sort" bin. Clean out the "to sort" bin weekly.
