How to Untangle Phone Cords

Tangled phone cords are a nuisance. A tangled cord reduces the usability of the handset, as the tangled mess prevents you from walking too far from the receiver. The cords could also become a tripping hazard if left unattended. If you have tangled phone cords, don't despair and don't try to yank them loose, as this makes matters worse. Untangling phone cords is time consuming, but doable with the right approach.

  Unplug both ends of the phone cord. It's easier to untangle the mess if you work with loose ends.

  Choose an end and trace the cord with your fingers until you come to the first tangle.

  Investigate the tangle. A simple twisted cord can be untwisted by rotating the phone cord in the opposite direction. However, if the tangle is knotted together, you need to take additional steps.

  Untie the knot carefully and slowly, working the cord through the knot one loop at a time. If you try to work out several parts of the knot at once, you'll jumble the knot more, wasting time in the process.

  Climb a ladder or stand on a tall chair after the knots are untied. Hold one end of the loose cord in the air and let the other end fall to the ground. Holding the cord vertically lets the cord fall back in its naturally straight position, removing any slight kinks in the cord that you may have missed.

  Reattach the phone cord to the receiver and handset.
