Tips on Storing Large Decorative Bowls

Pretty decorative bowls, whether cherished antiques, dainty porcelain or sturdy new stoneware, need to be stored properly. When organizing your kitchen and determining where and how to store your decorative bowls, there are several factors to take into consideration, including preventing damage, saving space, using a convenient storage location and finding alternatives to hiding your bowls out of sight.
  1. Wrapping

    • If you have a bowl that is particularly fragile, wrap it in tissue paper before putting it away. The tissue paper adds cushion and helps prevent chips or cracks. Even if your bowls are not particularly fragile, you may want to place a kitchen towel or paper towel between each bowl when you nest them together for storing.

    Nesting

    • Nesting is the practice of placing smaller bowls inside larger ones and is a good space saver. To keep your bowls as organized as possible, nest like bowls together. For example, nest mixing bowls together in one stack and serving bowls together in another stack. A stack of multiple bowls can get quite heavy, so store nested bowls on a lower shelf for safety.

    Storing

    • For convenience, store your bowls as close as possible to the location you're most likely to use them. For mixing bowls, this may be in the kitchen cabinets near the cookie sheets or on a pantry shelf near the flour and sugar. Store serving bowls saved for special occasions and holidays in the dining room buffet with the formal china. Store everyday serving bowls near your everyday plates and dishes.

    Using or Displaying Bowls

    • Some bowls are just too pretty to hide, so go ahead and keep them out. Put them to good use storing fruit on the kitchen counter, keys and mail by the front door, or pinecones, seashells or potpourri on the coffee table. If a bowl is extremely oversized, you may not have a cabinet large enough to hold it, anyway. In this case, use an easel or plate hanger to display the bowl as a piece of artwork.
