Last-Minute Check-Off List for Moving Out

Keys

• Locate all the keys to the doors, garage doors, sheds and anything else that requires a key. These are to be turned over to the new owners or landlord, but not until you are absolutely sure you have everything out and that everything is the way you want it.

Utilities

• Utility companies should be contacted 15 to 30 days prior to your move out date to allow a shut off appointment. Utilities include electric, natural gas, telephone, cable TV and Internet providers. If you are moving to the same area many utility companies will let you switch your current services to the new address. It is essential that you call and check on the utility shutoff the day you are moving out if they have not already been shut off.

Documents

• It is important that you have all your important documents with you or somewhere safe and easily accessible. Items are easy to lose or misplace while moving especially when you hire a moving company and are not aware of what is in the boxes. Make an special box or folder for your documents and bring it with you instead of loading it with the rest of the items.

Cleaning

• A last-minute cleaning of the entire place is an important part of moving. Remove all items including all trash, unused moving boxes and anything else you have left behind because you didn't want to take it with you. For rental properties it is essential that you vacuum all carpets, steam clean dirty carpets and sweep all other floor surfaces as well as fill the holes from hanging pictures and wall decor with spackle. Leaving the place as clean as possible will help you get your security deposit back.

Hidden Items

• Many people hide important items, money and jewelry in secret locations so that if they are robbed the items are safe. These locations can be on shelves, under carpet, in utility rooms, under loose floor boards or in other nooks and crannies. During your last-minute check of the residence you're leaving, be sure to check your hiding spots for items.
