Creative Clothing Storage Ideas

Perhaps you're fed up with opening your closet door and seeing a cluttered stack of folded jeans and pants and overstuffed racks brimming with clothes. Perhaps you simply want a more functional and attractive clothing storage system for your small living space. The first step is to clean out your closet and get rid of anything you haven't worn in the past year. Remember to pass it on instead of throwing it out. Then, you can move on to planning and implementing some creative storage options.
  1. Clothes on Display

    • If your space is limited and you don't have a closet, go with the flow and put your clothes on display. This means they need to be organized and tidy, but that makes life easier anyway. Use a clothing rack and place it in an empty corner or between your bed and the wall for quick access in the morning. Neatly lay shoes beneath, or hang a fabric shoe organizer on one end of the rack. Organize small items and accessories with small garment accessory bags -- also known as ditty bags.

    Get an Armoire

    • Go vintage and purchase or refurbish an armoire that suits your style. Choose a long, sleek mid-century-inspired model with room to hang clothes and a shelf or two on the bottom. Place a tub or modern chair close by for dressing, and you've got a 50s-inspired dressing area and clothing storage solution. You can also look at import stores and vintage boutiques for a couture armoire that's hand painted or elaborately carved wood or metal. If you find one that's worse for wear, treat it with a coat of vibrant paint or apply an intriguing decal over the front panels.

    Install Hooks

    • If you're at a loss for where to place outerwear, purses and clothing accessories like belts, install hooks on the wall for visible clothing storage. They come in a wide variety of styles, from basic metal hooks to larger white antler hooks, tree branches and abstract art-inspired hook systems. Granted, this works best for a smaller clothing collection; too many garments piled on can look cluttered, and some heavier garments may pull on themselves when hanging. Be choosey with this storage method.

    Get a Storage System

    • Make your clothing storage area into a room all its own with an attractive shelving and storage system. Units vary in price, quality and design. Look for something that accommodates all your clothing -- in use and out of season. Look for a unit that blends dresser or credenza drawers, cubicles and hanging racks so you can properly store each garment. You may even find a built-in dresser with an empty surface suitable for a vanity, and you can install a mirror on the wall behind it. The wall unit works well even if you don't have the luxury of a walk-in closet and are limited in space. If you live in a studio or don't want your clothes visible, hang a curtain from a ceiling track or beam. Curtains that drag a bit on the floor add height and a touch of elegance.
