How to Reuse Packing Materials

Americans produce approximately 4.3 pounds of waste per person every single day, according to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. One type of product that is easy to use repeatedly is packaging material. Reusing packing materials keeps these bulky items out of landfills and waste incinerators, putting them to good use instead. Various options exist for utilizing packing materials, rather than simply throwing them away.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a large box or container for storing bubble wrap and foam packing peanuts. Plastic packaging materials are usually very strong and can be reused many times. If you have a safe and convenient place to store packaging, you are more likely to reuse it each time you pack a gift or send a box.

Use empty packaging boxes for storage needs. Protect valuables in the attic or basement by storing them in boxes. Smaller boxes can be decorated and used for storing jewelry or small items.

    • 3

Advertise online that you have free packing materials such as boxes. Moving boxes are often in great demand, especially if they are sturdy and clean. Large appliance boxes make great forts and play houses for children.

Wash and store foam and plastic food packaging for general household use. Plastic food tubs and trays can be used as planters to start seedlings or as paint trays during home improvement projects. If you have excess packing materials such as tubs or trays, they can be used for craft projects or donated to a local pre-school.

Bring cardboard boxes and packing materials to your local recycling center. Cardboard boxes and paperboard are very commonly recycled products, accepted virtually everywhere.
