How to Tie a Hay Net

Hay nets are portable feeding bags for horses that are tricky to tie. If the net is too low or falls down, horses can get their legs caught. Don't use hay nets as a permanent method of feeding horses as they find it difficult to feed in this unnatural position. Hay nets are used in horse trailers and to entice horses to stand still for a farrier or during grooming.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill up the hay net with about three to four flakes of hay.

    • 2

Close the top by pulling the drawstring. Pull this tight so that the long string is accessible.

    • 3

Take the loose end of the drawstring and loop it over the rail on which you propose to hang the hay net. This should be higher than the horse's eye level when its head is raised.

    • 4

Take the drawstring and loop it through the metal ring on the bottom of the hay net. Again draw it over the rail to which you are tying the hay net. Pull tightly to make the metal ring come up to reach the top rings that hold the drawstring.

    • 5

Tie the drawstring to the rail with a secure knot. Alternatively, use a double-ended snap and attach one end to the drawstring and the other to a secure place on the hay net. Make sure no part of the net is hanging lower than the horse's chest.

    • 6

Remove the hay net immediately when the horse finishes eating.
