Murphy Bed & Other Storage Ideas

Murphy Beds

• Murphy beds are often found in studio apartments and smaller spaces because the beds take up only a small amount of space. At night, the bed folds out from the wall and lies flat, turning into a full size or queen size bed. During the day, the bed folds right back into the wall, giving you more floor space. To make the most out of your space, install bookshelves on either side of the bed. The shelves give you room for books, an alarm clock and anything else you need at night while also giving you space to display decorative items.

Daybeds

• If you prefer a stable bed but still want to make use of your small space, pick a daybed. The bed itself is a twin size bed, but it contains railing on the back and sides, which let you use it as a couch during the day. Look for daybeds that contain drawers underneath for storing clothes and other items. You have the benefit of a bed, couch and dresser without taking up as much space. For existing daybeds or those without drawers, plastic storage boxes underneath give you more room for storage.

Storage Furniture

• Storage furniture serves two purposes by acting as both storage and furniture. For example, use an old trunk in a bedroom or living room. Line the top of the trunk with an old quilt and throw pillows. Use the top of the trunk as additional seating and the inside for storing miscellaneous items. Storage ottomans are another good item for small rooms. The top of the ottoman lifts off for storage and, when the top is in place, it acts as a footstool or new chair for the room.

Pulling Double Duty

• Use items around the room that pull double duty and have more than one use. Opt for a room divider to display photographs and posters. Not only does it add decoration, but it also divides the room in two and hides away any private items. Hanging racks take up no floor space but give you storage for pots, pans, glassware and other kitchen items.
