How to Keep Christmas Decorations From Turning Colors in the Attic

Christmas decorations spend the majority of the year tucked away in storage, often in non-climate controlled parts of your home, such as the attic. Protect your Christmas decorations from discoloration and other hazards of storage by packing them away in the appropriate storage containers. If your attic has windows and receives plenty of sunlight, make sure you use opaque boxes and other containers for storage, so that light from the sun doesn't make your ornaments fade.

Things You'll Need

  • White tissue paper, acid-free
  • Acid-free opaque ornament boxes or cardboard wine box with divider
  • Packing tape
  • Marker
  • Wreath box (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap Christmas tree ornaments and other small, fragile Christmas decorations in acid-free tissue paper. Don't use newspaper, as the ink can rub off on the decorations, causing them to discolor. The acid-free paper will won't eat away at or damage the ornaments.

    • 2

Place the wrapped ornaments in an cardboard box designed to hold ornaments or decorations in the off-season. The box should have small compartments to hold each ornament. An archival quality box will protect the ornaments from the elements such as light. You can also use an empty wine bottle box with the dividers still inside it.

    • 3

Close each box, and seal shut with packing tape to keep light out. Label the boxes, so that you know which ornaments are in which box.

    • 4

Store artificial Christmas wreaths in a sturdy cardboard box designed to hold a wreath. You can also hang the wreath from a wooden coat hanger, and cover it in a dark, plastic bag. Hang the hook of the coat hanger from a rafter in the attic to protect the shape of the wreath during the spring, summer and fall. The dark, plastic bag will keep the light out.

Place an artificial Christmas tree in a large, durable storage bag or duffel bag. The bag will keep dust off of the tree. Use an opaque bag to block out the light.
