How to Hide Things in Your Home

Package the Item

  Buy moisture absorbing packets and a water-tight container, such as a zip-lock bag or medicine bottle.

  Put the item and a moisture absorbing packet in a plastic, water-tight container. The container keeps the item clean and dry, and the packet prevents mold and mildew.

  Seal the bag. Try not to trap too much air inside. Smaller items are easier to hide.

Disguise the Item

  Choose a disguise that blends in with the surroundings. For example, do not try to hide the item in a cereal box if you want to keep it in your bedroom.

  Disguise the bag that contains the item. For example, this could be as simple as putting it inside a container of flour, diversion safe or discarded child's toy. Diversion safes look like the actual product and are weighted to feel full. (See References 2) Sometimes a disguise is enough to hide an item.

  Place the disguised item in the appropriate setting. For example, if you put cash inside of a child's toy, put the toy back in the child's room with all of the other toys.

Hide the Item

  Choose a hiding spot that is safe. For example, do not hide something in the bottom of a trash can if someone else in your household could take out the trash.

  Use a hiding place that is easy to access if you use the item frequently or may need the item quickly. Disguise the item to hide it in plain sight or choose a spot that is easy to access, such as a vent.

  Choose an inconvenient location if you do not need to access it. This reduces the chance that someone else will accidentally find the item. For example, bury it in gravel in the bottom of an aquarium or in the potting soil of a plant. You could also hide it in a hollow furniture leg or inside an appliance, such as an air conditioner.
