How to Make Your Own Fabric Organizers

If you sew or quilt, you most likely have a "stash," a collection of fabric that you keep on hand for potential projects or inspiration. A sewer's stash can get overwhelming, especially if the fabric isn't folded neatly or stored in an organized fashion. You can make simple fabric organizers that allow you to neatly stack your fabric collection in a bookcase or other shelving unit. Make as many organizers as you need to corral your stash and allow some room for growth.

Instructions

  Draw a 10-inch by 14-inch rectangle on the cardboard, using the ruler to help you draw straight lines. Draw as many rectangles as organizers you need.

  Cut out the rectangles with the craft knife. Use the ruler as a straight edge as you cut.

  Measure in 4 inches from the 14-inch right side of each organizer and draw a vertical line down the cardboard. Measure 1 1/2 inches from the top and bottom and make a mark at each point. Measure 3 inches from the top and bottom and make another mark at each point.

  Draw a line from the mark at 1 1/2 inches to the mark at 3 inches on the bottom and top. Draw a 1-inch line over to the right at the bottom of each vertical line, then draw another vertical line up from the 1-inch line. Make another 1-inch line to make a small rectangle.

  Cut the rectangle on three sides, leaving the top line on the top rectangle uncut and the bottom line on the bottom rectangle uncut.

  Fold each piece of fabric into a strip that measures 11 inches wide. If you're folding a yard of 44-inch wide fabric, you'd fold it four times. Tuck the fabric underneath the two tabs you cut, then wrap the remaining fabric around the organizer. Push a straight pin into the end of the fabric to secure it to the organizer. At the top of the organizer, write the name of the fabric and how many yards you have.
