How to Recycle Paper in the Great Lakes

Mixed paper makes up 33 percent of the United States solid waste production. Recycling paper and paper products is a much better option than simply throwing them away. The Great Lakes region encompasses six different upper Midwest states and Western New York and Pennsylvania, all of which have recycling options. Paper recycling is becoming increasingly popular in all states, making it easier and more convenient.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your municipal solid waste or recycling provider. Local waste management contractors can be found in the telephone book or by a simple search online. Many communities throughout the Great Lakes region offer curbside pick up service for paper recycling. In some areas, it is part of regular waste removal services, but in others you must pay an additional fee.

    • 2

Ask the recycling contractor if they provide the bin and if they need you to sort the paper before placing it in the bin or at the curb. Obtain the pick up schedule and bring your paper recycling to the curb on the appropriate day.

    • 3

Search online or contact your township for information about local paper recycling drop off bins. Some communities have recycling centers that provide for mixed paper recycling. Ask the center about their requirements for sorting paper and cardboard products.

    • 4

Store paper products in a bin or bins in your home for recycling. Sort these mixed paper products according to your local recycling center's guidelines. Paper products include newspapers, telephone books, office paper, corrugated cardboard and paper board. Many larger recyclers allow these products to be mixed, others require that newspapers, cardboard and office paper are sorted into separate piles.

    • 5

Remove plastic tape, twine and wrappers from paper products before bringing them in for recycling. Throw away wet, paint-stained or greasy cardboard, as these are generally not welcome for recycling.

    • 6

Bring your paper recycling to your local Great Lakes community recycling center. Save gas by combining your paper recycling drop off with other recyclable materials and errands.
