How to Determine Thickness of Terry Cloth

Terry cloth is a type of fabric that belongs to the same family as velour. They are both warp pile fabrics, states the book, "Sew Any Fabric" by Claire Shaeffer. Terry cloth is a soft material with tiny loops covering its entire surface area. Velour has these same loops, except they're all cut, giving it a velvet-like softness. Terry cloth usually consists of hemp, rayon, cotton or blends and is sturdy and usually easy to work with for sewing projects. You'll find terry cloth material as the fabric used in towels, mattress pads, robes, wash cloths, gloves or blankets. You can also ascertain the thickness of terry cloth.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the terry cloth item out in front of you. Smooth out any wrinkles.

    • 2

Pull up one corner and press the edge against the side of a ruler. Write down the thickness. The greater the thickness, the more expensive the item usually is.

    • 3

Walk around to the other side of the item and pull up another corner, placing it against a ruler, measuring the thickness. The measurement should be exactly the same, if this is a new item. An older item might have slight discrepancies in thickness due to uneven use.
