How to Stop Bending the Hanger

If your clothes are too heavy for plastic or metal hangers, the hangers might bend or break. A hanger could also bend if you pull your clothing off the hanger too quickly and or with too much force. There are many varieties of hangers to choose from that are sturdy, prevent the garment from slipping off the hanger and accommodate random straps. A few small changes can prevent your hangers from bending and will keep your clothes organized.

Remove your clothes from the hangers that are bending. The hanger may be too thin and flimsy to hold that particular article of clothing or the piece of clothing might be too heavy to be hung up constantly. Plastic or metal hangers are not designed to hold substantial articles or more than one piece of clothing.

Wood hangers are built from stronger materials and hold heavier clothing.

Replace items that are bending your flimsy hangers with wood hangers. These can be purchased at housewares stores. Heavier items, such as winter jackets, sturdy jeans and knit sweaters can cause lightweight hangers to bend. It would take a lot of weight to break or bend a wooden hanger as these are designed to withstand the weight of hefty clothing.

Place articles of clothing that do not easily stay on wood hangers in drawers or on shelves in your closet. Items such as sweaters, cardigans and other stretchy tops hold their shape better when they are not draped over a hanger. Folding these items flat prevents them from bending plastic hangers. This also stops the formation of stretch marks on the shoulders that come from the hanger. Cardigans and wide-neck sweaters might fall off the hanger if it does not have rubber grips on the tops to prevent slipping.

Gently pull the clothing off your hangers when retrieving items. Plastic hangers function well for T-shirts and tank tops, especially if there are grooves to hold straps. However, if you use too much force to free the shirt from the hanger, it could bend too sharply and snap the hanger in two. This is less likely to happen with wood hangers.
