How to Recycle Plastic 1

As one of the most common and highly recycled resins, plastic is found in a wide range of household items, from water bottles to kitchen appliances, utensils, diapers and food storage bags. Plastic is identified by a resin code number from 1 to 6. Plastic 1 is polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE), which is used to make beverage bottles, microwavable food trays and jars for jams, jellies and pickles. According to American Chemistry Council, 60 percent of Americans have access to a plastics recycling program. Recycling plastics saves landfill space and makes energy available for creating new products or heating and cooling homes.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit Earth911.com. Select 1 Plastic (PETE) from the drop-down menu under the box on the left. Enter your zip code or address, city and state into the box on the right. Click "Search," which will generate a list of plastic recycling programs that are available in your area. Click on each listing for more information. Some programs provide a curbside service, which requires you to place your plastic items in a box on an specified day of the week. Alternatively, you may be able to take your plastics to a local recycling center.

Clean out your plastic bottles, jars and containers before putting them in the curbside box or taking them to the recycling center. In most cases, it is fine to leave labels on, but it is worth checking in advance with your local program.

    • 3

Leave caps on plastic bottles unless specifically asked to remove them.

    • 4

Keep a container in your car to store any plastic bottles that you use when you are away from home. This will reduce the temptation to throw them in the trash instead of recycling them. Empty the contents of the container into your recycling bin when you get home.
