Solutions for Hiding Electrical Wires

Consumer electronics are an increasing part of homes and offices. The cords from electronics can become an unsightly, tangled mess that give rooms a cluttered look. However, many products exist to help organize and hide cords, in addition to some simple solutions that help keep them from view.
  1. Rugs

    • Place rugs down in the middle of a room across which a cord must run. Sometimes an electrical outlet is on the opposite side of the room from where you would prefer to place a television, for example. If you decide to place a rug down on top of a cord, make sure that the cord is in good condition. You should also check the cord regularly to make sure it is not splitting or fraying. Frayed electrical cords can easily cause a fire.

    Furniture

    • On desks and television stands that have open backs or bottom portions, cords can be attached to the underside of the surface to keep them out of direct view. This can be done by applying special cord hooks, or decorative hooks purchased from a hardware store, to any part of furniture that is nearly or completely hidden from view. Sometimes you won't be able to hide every bit of cord, but still make a large improvement. If you do not want to damage the material of the furniture piece, you can purchase and attach adhesive Velcro strips, which can be wrapped around wires to hold them in place.

    Small Electronics

    • For small electronics such as mp3 players, cell phones and digital cameras, charging stations are available at chain and electronics stores. These come equipped with drawers and shelves with openings in the back that guide cords toward an electrical outlet while hiding both the cords and outlet. Additionally, many varieties are available to fit your decor. Having a charging station can also help you keep track of your small electronic devices that can easily be lost amongst clutter-prone homes and offices.

    Flat Panel TVs

    • Hanging flat panel televisions on living room and bedroom walls is quite popular but wall mounting requires cords to hang down from the television to the outlet. A simple solution to this problem is to purchase plastic, rounded coverings that camouflage the cords. You can paint these coverings to match the paint on your walls. Media tables and short bookshelves also help to hide cords and outlets and can be adorned with decorative plants or picture frames to further aid in concealing cables.
