How to Declutter a Small Mobile Home

De-cluttering a small mobile home may seem a difficult task at the start. The biggest problem in getting started may be lack of space. The limits of the interior may impede storage and offer little room to maneuver when sorting and piling items.

While lack of space may be problematic, it also works in your favor. You begin with far less square footage to cover than you'd face in a larger home, and because you know the limits of the available storage, it gives you a strict focus on how many or how few items you can afford to keep.

Perform basic cleaning chores before you start to de-clutter. By doing the dishes, putting away the laundry and so on, you will have more room to work.

    • 2

Select an area in which to start. Proceed by room, by cabinet, or start at one point and work your way around the circumference of the interior.

    • 3

Lay down a tarp and use the lawn for extra workspace. Pull everything out so you can see it, rather than assuming you know what you have in a box or a drawer. You may be surprised to find what is actually in a tote or bag.

    • 4

Get rid of any safety hazards, such as large stacks of paper and teetering boxes. Recycle or throw out old magazines, newspapers, books, unused clothing and other large-volume stored items that may present a hazard in case of fire.

    • 5

Sort ruthlessly. Follow a strict set of rules. If you have not used an item in six months, give it away or throw it out. If you own multiples of the same item, pare down their number. For example, you may have a set of eight glasses but only use two on a daily basis. Save four to have spares or six for company and get rid of the others. Give priority to items that combine uses, such as a foot stool that offers storage.

Rethink and reorganize the entire home. While one spot may not be overflowing or on your list to clean, that space may hold items you can do without or items that might fit better in another place. Even saving a small amount of space can make a big difference to the overall organization of your mobile home; because the space within a small mobile home is quite limited, you may have more items than you can store sensibly in one room but have unused space in another area. For example, you may lack enough pantry space but have spare closet space in the bedroom.

Combine several smaller containers to store your items in a larger container, or break the contents of a large container into several smaller totes as needed. This will help you fit items into oddly sized cabinets and closets. Store items close to where you will use them. Store rarely used items out of the way of your daily routine.
