Survival Supplies for a Year

Putting together a survival kit for a year requires serious thought, careful planning and dedication to your cause. The basic needs for survival are clean water, food and shelter; to plan for a whole year without running water, electricity and grocery stores you must visualize life with necessities only and forget about luxuries like bubble bath, Swiss chocolate and hamburgers. 1. Buying Survival Food

    • The easiest way to prepare food for one year is to start buying a few extra items to put away each time you go shopping. Canned foods keep well, but stick to high protein, healthy items like beans, soy protein, spam and other canned meats. Rice and flour and soybeans are available in bulk and can be stored in lidded buckets. Salt in some quantity would also be a good idea as it can be used to preserve fresh foods and meat. Butter can also be purchased in tins and army rations are another great storage food to have on hand as they are packed and designed to last in harsh conditions.

    Growing Survival Food

    • You will need basic gardening tools for tilling the soil for growing survival food and a survival seed kit which will grow enough food to feed a family for one or two seasons. Include seeds for both summer and winter crops and include no hybrid varieties in case you need to grow for seed. If you are not already an avid gardener, buy a book on basic vegetable gardening. Other useful equipment includes a garden hose and fittings. Invest in a water tank to catch rain water from the roof to successfully grow your own vegetables and provide clean drinking water.

Fishing, Hunting and Trapping for Survival

    • Simple fishing gear like rods and hand reels, will enable you to catch fresh fish if you are near to the coast, a lake or a river. It is quite possible to survive on fish fresh and vegetables and remain healthy. Fish can also be salted and stored. Hunting and trapping equipment should also be part of your survival preparations, including a rifle and ammunition, sharp butcher's knives and rabbit traps to ensure a supply of fresh meat.

    Other Important Survival Items

    • A basic carpentry kit of hand tools for building and a general use tool kit should be included. Rope, tarps and even a tent could prove useful if your shelter is destroyed. A supply of waterproof containers, water filtration equipment and basic medicines, like antibiotics, analgesics, and an anti fungal are also a must. Also, include soaps, detergents and disinfectants in your survival kit.
