The Difference Between Packets and Cartons

Packets and cartons are types of containers used for packaging, shipping and storage. They come in different shapes, materials and have different functions. Packets, which are also known as parcels, are types of containers primarily used for food items or as garbage bags. Cartons, which are typically made out of cardboard, are used for everything, from food items to shipping and storage containers.
  1. Materials

    • Cartons are generally made from paperboard or cardboard, various plastics or composite materials. There are "food grade" cartons that have direct contact with food items. Cartons can also be waxed or covered with polyethylene to keep moisture out, depending on their function. Packets can be made out of paperboard, plastic, metal or other materials. Metalized packets provide light and insect barriers and increase the shell life of dehydrated foods. Oxygen absorber packets contain powered iron dioxide as an active ingredient and extend the shelf life of dry foods to prevent the growth of molds and eliminate the need for additives, such as sulfur dioxide. Desiccant packets, which contain calcium oxide or silica gel, absorb moisture and act as a drying agent for powdered foods, such as sugar, flour and salt.

    Types

    • Carton containers can come in many different types, such as folding cartons, aseptic cartons, which are used for liquids and are laminated with foil, egg cartons, and milk and juice cartons. There are many different types of packets, typically used for single-serving items, including cigarette, ketchup and sugar packets or plastic bags.

    Usage

    • Cartons are generally used for storage, shipping and packaging food and other items, such as cleaning and beauty supplies. Packets are used for packaging food and non-food items, such as cigarettes, or for garbage disposal.

    Functionality

    • Because they are made from thicker and sturdier materials, cartons appear to be more functional than packets, which are usually made from thinner materials, such as plastic or thin paperboard. That is why cartons are generally used to store and ship bulky objects.
