How to Store Scrap Pieces of Electrical Wires

Unorganized scraps of electrical wire will not only create a messy work space, but can also create additional expenses. Not knowing what resources are available may result in over-purchasing wire. Electrical wires include extension cords, small electronics wires or home electrical wires. One of the most overlooked storage areas is vertical storage. Utilizing vertical storage keeps work benches, shelves and cabinet spaces free from clutter and debris. Well-labeled wire scraps, organized vertically, provides an easy to view and an easily accessible solution wire storage.

  • Screws
  • Masking tape
  • Twist ties
  • Pegboard hooks

Instructions

      Hang a piece of pegboard in a convenient location. Pegboard should be securely attached to wall studs using wood screws. The amount of pegboard needed depends on the amount and size of scraps to store.

      Sort the scraps into piles based on type, grade or use.

      Measure each strand of wire and write the measurement on a piece of masking tape.

      Gently coil each wire. Twist tie the coil to prevent uncoiling.

      Attach the masking tape tag to the coiled wire.

      Repeat Step 3 through Step 5 until all wires have been measured, coiled and tagged.

      Hang the coiled scraps on the pegboard hooks. Keep the coils grouped by size, type of wire or use.
