Easy & Practical Craft Room Organizers to Make Out of Fabric

You won't feel very inspired to make things if your craft supplies are disorganized. One way to tackle craft room mess and disorganization is to put your skills to use making items to help you sort and organize your supplies. You can make a number of organizers out of fabric to stash away spools of thread, bottles of glitter and balls of yarn.
  1. Hanging Organizer

    • A simple hanging organizer with pockets will keep the supplies you need handy and will cut down on clutter in your craft room or studio. It's a great way to store spools of thread by your sewing machine. Use a heavier weight fabric for the back of the organizer and a lightweight cotton for the pockets. Cut a hole in the center top and attach a metal grommet so that you can hang the organizer on a push pin or hook on the wall. Custom-size the pockets so that they can hold anything from spools of thread to sewing shears and seam rippers.

    Storage Box

    • It's not very difficult to make a box out of fabric. You simply need to cut two pieces of cotton into the shape of a plus sign, then fold up the sides of the plus sign and sew them together. Make the box sturdier by adding heavy weight interfacing between the two pieces of fabric. If you are feeling particularly ambitious or want to protect whatever will live in the box from dust, sew a matching lid for each box.

    Idea Board

    • Some crafters cut out pictures or design ideas that inspire them and hang them on the wall in their craft room. Keep those ideas organized by making a ribbon board. Cover a corkboard or prestretched canvas with a pretty, printed fabric, then criss-cross ribbon over the surface of the board. Secure the ribbons where they intersect with pins if you're using a corkboard or with glue if you're using canvas. Hang the board on the wall and tuck inspiring pictures and ideas between the ribbons.

    In-Progress Folders

    • Keep the supplies you need for any works in progress together by sewing a few fabric portfolios to store them in. Use a vinyl-coated cotton or a cotton canvas fabric for extra-sturdy portfolios. Making the portfolios is very simple. You may not even need to cut any fabric. Fold a 1/2 yard of fabric in half with the right sides facing in. Sew it together along the sides, then turn it right side out and slide your materials inside. Add a strip of hook and loop closure to the inside opening to hold the folder closed.
