Issues with Recycle Bins

Recycling allows you to sort your trash and give back to the environment at the same time. Recycling bins help make this process easier, but there are some issues to be aware of when establishing and maintaining your recycling setup at home, like cleaning the bins and sorting the bins.
  1. Sorting

    • Sorting items by paper, plastic and glass is an important step in the recycling process. Make everything simple by having one bin for each type of material, so you don't have to sort things out later. You can even make homemade labels with pictures of the type of item that should go in each, like a newspaper to depict paper and a soda can to depict metal, then tape the labels to each bin.

    Cleaning

    • Recycling bins are essentially storing trash, so they can sometimes become dirty. Take time to clean your bins about once a month so they don't become corroded with grime over time. A simple solution of soap and water rubbed over the bins with a sponge will keep everything neat and tidy. You can also use baking soda to help remove odors.

    Stealing

    • You might be worried about someone stealing your recycling bins once you place them outside your home to be picked up. If this is a concern in your neighborhood, learn your trash company's pickup routine so that you can place the bins out just when the truck arrives. Or drive the bins to your local recycling plant yourself.

    Storing

    • Recycled materials can give off an odor when stored over time. To cut down on the aroma in the home, store the bins in the garage or a shed where the smells won't affect the family. Also, rinse out cans and jars before placing in bins to keep everything as fresh as possible.
