Ways to Reuse a Twist Tie

Many people a gain a collection of twist ties after bringing home bags of bread or bulk items from the grocery store. These handy pieces of twisted metal, often wrapped in colored paper, are rife with practical uses around the house. So before you purge your collection, take a quick look around and see if you can give those old twist ties a second life.
  1. Zipper Pulls

    • If the pull has broken off your zipper, run a twist tie through the hole and twist the ends to tie it in place. The extra bit of wire and paper will make it easier to pull up the zipper until you can replace it. If you have a pants fly that tends to come down, secure the zipper in the closed position by using a twist tie to connect the zipper pull to the button at the top.

    Cords Organization

    • Many household electronics often means many cords to power them. To keep cords organized and neat, coil up the excess length and keep in place with a twist tie. If you need a system to remember which cords are plugged into which socket, use ties of different colors. Twist a tie on a cord and tape a small piece of the same tie next to the socket it goes into, so it's easy to match them up when necessary. You can also use ties to keep Christmas lights in place and to prevent headphone cords from becoming twisted.

    Fix Your Glasses

    • Hidden under the twist tie paper is a thin, flexible wire. It is usually the right size to run through a screw hole on a pair of glasses to provide the means for a quick fix when a glasses' screw comes loose.

    Keep It Closed

    • Twist ties provide an added level of security when just a little bit of extra help is needed. Use ties to hold together the zippers on a backpack or suitcase if they tend to fall apart. Instead of buying a lock for a small animal cage, use a twist tie to keep the door in place.

    Tie Up Flowers and Plants

    • If you need to tie garden plants to a stake, use twist ties instead of string. The next time you purchase or pick cut flowers, tie the stems together to keep the bouquet looking neat and the blooms standing up straight when they are in a vase.

    Curly Ringlets

    • Twist ties for the hair might not pass a fashion test if worn in public during the day, but they are practical for overnight styling. Wet hair in the evening, section hair with a comb, twist each section and secure with a twist tie. Ringlets will form when the hair dries.
