Substitutes for Boxes in Packing

Boxes are traditionally the container of choice when packing. However, there are a number of substitutes for boxes in packing that can be more cost-effective, easier to transport and store, and can be reused for multiple purposes. In selecting the most appropriate substitutes for boxes in packing, take into consideration how heavy items are, the type of packing they require, how long they will remain in storage and how the items will be transported.
  1. Garbage Bags

    • Garbage bags are fairly economical and highly versatile. Garbage bags can be used to pack clothing, bedding, towels, pillows, stuffed animals and soft toys. Just about anything that is non-breakable can be packed into garbage bags and easily transported. Garbage bags can also be used to haul away refuse after a move. Select garbage bags that are strong and reinforced and take note of the suggested weight limit on the box. Do not use garbage bags for items that are delicate or breakable and do not use garbage bags as substitutes for boxes in packing if items will be in storage for a long period of time, as the contents could become moldy and mildewed if any moisture gets inside. Garbage bags may not be a cost-effective tool if renting a moving truck or using a moving service that will typically be used more efficiently if items can be stacked.

    Plastic Storage Bins

    • Plastic storage bins offer many advantages as substitutes for boxes in packing. Most plastic storage bins are only slightly more expensive than new cardboard boxes purchased from a moving company, and they can be reused for a number of purpose, making them environmentally friendly. Plastic storage bins are also much stronger than typical cardboard boxes, can be tightly sealed and have easy carrying handles. They are also designed to be uniform and stackable, which makes for a more efficient move. Plastic storage bins are also good substitutes for boxes in packing if items are going to be stored for any period of time, as they will resist leaking and moisture damage.

    Plastic Bankers Boxes

    • Household files, business papers and important documents can be packed and stored in plastic banker's boxes. These containers are designed to hold file folders and will keep paperwork secure and in place. Many also have carrying handles, which will allow you to keep important documents with you and secure during a move.

    Suitcases

    • Packing a suitcase with items that would normally be put into a box makes good economical sense. Suitcases are designed to hold clothing and personal accessories, and since suitcases will likely be packed along with other belongings, doubling up by putting clothes inside takes care of two issues at once.

    Pillow Cases

    • Pillow cases provide a good substitute for boxes in packing for packing items that are lightweight yet bulky, and still need a little protection. Good items to pack in pillow cases include silk plants, hats, Halloween costumes, drapes and valances.
