How to Tie a Woggle

The woggle is also called the Turk's Head Knot. It forms the neckerchief for the Cub Scouts uniform during the Wood Badge training. When made with leather it is referred to as the Wood Badge Woggle and reserved for the Scouting Leader. When made with other rope materials, it is simply known as the Turk's Head Woggle. The Turk's Head Woggle is made by every scouter on the first day of the Wood Badge training. The knot signifies unity, service and selfless comradeship.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the braid (one end of the rope) between your thumb and index finger of your left hand with your palm turned up. Hold this end down with your thumb and run the free end behind the next three fingers to bring it up on your palm before the last finger.

    • 2

Run the free end of the rope across the point where your thumb is holding down the other end. Wrap this free end twice over this point by passing it over the back of your hand again and again with the second loop nearer the fingertips.

    • 3

Turn your palm over. Move the braid of rope on the inside over the braid on the outside of the back of your hand to form a crisscross. Pass the free end of the rope between the two braids by running it below the braid on the outside and pulling out from the middle of the crisscrossed loops. Pass the free end again in between the crisscross but ahead closer to your pinky finger.

    • 4

Turn your hand over so your palm faces up again. Secure the free end by threading it over the braid closer to the fingertips and under the braid next to it.

    • 5

Thread the other end of the rope under the inner braid and over the outer braid so that it becomes parallel and alongside the first free end. Complete this two more times.

    • 6

Adjust the lengths of the ends. Remove your hand gently. Tuck in the ends of the braid inside the knot leaving only the free end of the rope.
