Before you do anything, you must accurately measure your alcove so that you know exactly how much space you have to work with. Measure the width of the alcove for shelving or clothing hanging rods, and measure the depth of the closet to see if you will have enough room to hang clothes as well as install a door. The height of the alcove will tell you if you can install drawers, how many shelves you can install or if you can hang several tiers of clothes.
If you want to hang clothes in your new alcove wardrobe, you will need to install rods for hanging clothes. Unfortunately, you can't install curtain rods to hang clothes as they won't provide enough room. You can purchase closet rods at home improvement stores, but you can also buy PVC pipe and two fittings called "blind flange," and install this like a closet rod. Always ensure your rod or pipe is cut to the correct width.
Shelving can also be very easy to install, and there are many shelving options available. Adjustable shelves are a good option for closets and wardrobes because you change your shelf configuration as your needs change. One of the most important things to remember when installing shelves is to purchase shelving that will fit inside the alcove using your width and depth measurements.
Boxes made out of fabric, wicker or leather are attractive storage options if you will leave your alcove visible to the room. If you plan on installing a curtain or door to cover your alcove storage space, you can use plastic bins instead to store loose items. Clear plastic bins are good storage solutions because you can see what you need at a glance.
Installing drawers in your alcove wardrobe is also possible. If you have room, you could place a small dresser in the alcove, but freestanding drawer units are also available in plastic or painted wood. These freestanding drawer units can fit under shelves or hanging clothes.
