How To Store an Oil Painting

If you need to put an oil painting in storage due to lack of wall space or any other reason, treat it like the delicate piece of artwork that it is. To keep the painting looking its best, be sure to clean it before storage and avoid touching it with your bare hands, as the oil from your fingers may degrade paint. Avoid storing the painting in a warm location, as heat tends to dry out canvas and soften paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of soft, cotton gloves before removing the oil painting from a wall. Wash and thoroughly dry your hands before handling the painting if you don't have gloves. Carry the artwork by its frame and avoid touching the painting, if possible.

    • 2

Place the painting on a clean, flat surface. Dust the artwork and its frame gently with a soft, natural-bristle artist's brush. Do not use any cleaners or water on the painting.

    • 3

Slide the artwork into the box the frame came in to protect it during storage. Seal the box with masking tape to keep dust and insects from reaching the painting.

    • 4

Store the boxed painting in a cool, dry location free of moisture and away from light. Prop the box up against a wall rather than laying it flat on the ground.
