Garbage Cans That Totally Seal

Owning a home comes with a fair amount of responsibility. A homeowner is responsible for painting, cleaning, mowing the lawn and taking out the trash on a regular basis. Even the best of neighborhoods and nicest houses come with challenges. One of these challenges is ensuring that your trash isn't tampered with. Pesky rodents, reckless teenagers and weather can topple your cans, which is why it is important to invest in a bin that seals.
  1. Types

    • When you purchase a trash can you want to consider where it will be used and for what purpose. The answers to these questions will determine what type of material the can needs to be made out of and how securely it will need to seal. You can find trash cans that are manufactured out of plastic, rubber and steel. In addition, the locking mechanisms range in complexity, usability and security.

    Rubber Handle-Locking Cans

    • Rubber handle locking cans are great for home use. Rubbermaid manufactures several types of cans like these, and you can find them produced by other vendors as well. They are often cylindrical in shape and have a lid that sits directly on top of the can. Two handles are placed on the product directly across from each other. Once the lid is placed on the can you can rotate the handles upward to lock the lid into place. This type of locking feature works well in most scenarios when the can is dropped or knocked over, but it may not provide the type of locking you need if the can blows down the street in a storm.

    Stainless Steel Pressure-Locking Cans

    • Stainless steel pressure locking cans are another option. The stainless steel finish on these trash cans makes them versatile. Depending on your needs you could just as easily use one of these types of cans inside as you could outside. The pressure locking system seals these units tight. The firm seal traps any odors in if you are planning on using the can in your kitchen or keeps the trash securely within the device if you are using it outside. Some models have a large top opening to enable the owner to easily scrape plates or dispose of large trash quickly to avoid wafting smells into the room.

    Steel Handle-Locking Cans

    • The most economical route is the simple steel trash can with a locking lid. These types of cans are made from unfinished steel and shaped in a cylindrical form. They are not attractive enough for indoor use but serve their purpose outdoors. For around $15 you can own one of these types of trash cans. Many have a U-shaped handle that rotates 180 degrees from one side of the can to the other. Once the lid is placed on top of the can you can rotate the handle to the 90-degree mark (directly above the lid), and it will lock the contents inside.
